While Rep. Helman is dredging up Virginia’s higher education’s past, it may surprise some to learn that our Selective Service System has always been fully funded by Federal Tax Dollars. Why do I raise this point here ? Some respondents to your post looked down the road and discussed transitioning VMI’s funding pie chart, going heavy on the Federal source & eliminating any sourcing from Virginia. As the proponents for admitting women to VMI found, the lynchpin of their presentation to SCOTUS was that “VMI receives partial funding from the Federal Government.” That was the necessary hook that made the state military school a target for the ladies and their lawyers at the Supreme Court. When they voted, Justice Thomas recused himself because his son was a Cadet at VMI. This did not tip the outcome. The issue of the Selective Service System did not figure in the “Admission of Women” case.

Meanwhile, the fully Federally-funded Selective Service System (I have not written, “The Draft”) rolls along, excluding women & occasionally placing late night television commercials that begin, “ If you’re a man, over 18, you need to sign-up with the Selective Service System….There are penalties for failing to do so. You may be denied student loans….” So much for equal protection under the law.

Should this argument; “because VMI is partially funded by the Federal Government” may someday be invoked, as one or two respondents posted, “have the Federal Government buy & run VMI.” A fairly easy statement to compose, but not as cognizant of your closing, cautionary, statement. I sense that the current mission from Richmond is to level the post, remove gravesites there, remove the founding stones/plaques of the Nations two significant Fraternities, transport the Statues of Washington & Marshall far away…scorched-earth.

Final point, I graduated from George Mason High School in 1967 and we knew that he wrote the “Virginia Declaration of Rights”, later used as the base for our Bill of Rights. In 2021, the City of Falls Church School Board (most of whom were relative newcomers), after receiving input from alumni and taxpayers eradicated George Mason’s name because he had been a slave owner. Then they demolished the building after building a new one, naming it Meridian H.S. I submitted a long response, suggesting that Mason’s name be retained, his “Will” be displayed and the lobby frame a mural that went through the entire history, even the disgrace of his “Will” naming each slave by first name alone. https://www.consource.org/document/george-masons-last-will-and-testament-1773-3-20/

I saw my High School have its building leveled & have its name changed by virtue signalers. They have been silent on the University that bears the same name. I suspect there are some in Virginia who seek to level the buildings and erase the name of VMI. Thank you for presenting your case for VMI.

Finally, the Gov. is also the head of the Virginia Militia, which includes all persons between the age of 16 and 55. I wonder how long it will take the Dems. To repeal this code :

Thanks for highlighting one of the triggers of the attacks aimed at VMI from the Spanberger Democrats: VMI pushed back on DEI. VMI broke the Democrat rules! and now there's hell to pay. All this retribution with no consideration of turmoil recklessly cast around upstanding focused cadets currently enrolled.

Please keep writing about this. What are other reasons some of these legislators hold VMI in such contempt?
